NEW YORK – Work has resumed on St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center, the New York Post reported on February 17, adding that the work “likely won’t be visible for another month.”

Michael Psaros, Vice Chairman of The Friends of St. Nicholas, told the Post that “the Minnesota company fabricating the exterior screen for the long-stalled project was paid $5.7 million and has resumed working on it.”

The Friends of St. Nicholas is trying to raise $42 million to complete the project.

“Construction stopped in December 2017 when the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese ran out of money,” the Post reported, adding that “the shrine will replace a more modest church destroyed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the total cost is expected to reach $80 million.”

The Post report also cited The National Herald’s article on the $20 million donation for the completion of St. Nicholas Faith voted on by the nonprofit Faith: An Endowment for Orthodoxy and Hellenism.

Though he declined to comment on the Faith vote, Psaros told the Post about the recent $2 million donation by Greek-American real estate billionaire George Marcus.

The construction on St. Nicholas Church itself should begin in March, Psaros told the Post which added that the Archdiocese has pledged to complete it by September 11, 2021.
